Premier League football is back. The 2026/27 season begins under the Emirates Stadium lights on Friday, August 21, when defending champions Arsenal host newly promoted Coventry City.

The champions begin as favourites for obvious reasons.

Arteta has stability while City, Liverpool and Chelsea adapt to new managers. Arsenal also know what it feels like to finish the job after finally ending their long Premier League title wait.

The challenge changes now.

Last season they were chasing the trophy. This season every opponent will measure itself against the champions.

Manchester City: life after Pep

For the first time in years, Manchester City begin a Premier League season without Pep Guardiola in charge.

Enzo Maresca knows the City environment from his previous coaching work at the club and inherits an elite squad, but following one of football's most influential managers is an enormous challenge.

Sky's model still rates City as Arsenal's closest title challenger, showing just how highly their squad is regarded.

Liverpool: Iraola gets an immediate test at Newcastle

Andoni Iraola's league debut as Liverpool head coach comes at St James' Park.

That is exactly the sort of fixture that can instantly define the mood around a new manager.

Manchester United: can Carrick build on third place?

Michael Carrick starts his first full campaign after guiding Manchester United to third place last season and earning the role permanently.

Their first test could be uncomfortable.

Hull City will be celebrating their Premier League return in front of a home crowd with very little to lose.

United should be favourites, but promoted teams at home on opening weekend are exactly the sort of opponents who can turn an apparently routine fixture into a long afternoon.

The relegation predictions are brutal

Sky's supercomputer currently predicts all three promoted teams to return immediately to the Championship.

Hull receive the harshest assessment, with the model giving them an 81.6% probability of relegation. Ipswich are at 47.5%, while Coventry and Nottingham Forest are both rated at 43.1%.

It is worth stressing again: this is a statistical model before a ball has been kicked.

Football has a habit of making pre-season predictions look very silly by May.
